Getting Started

Welcome to the Playbook! This database is packed with policies and programs designed to help schools build effective mental health plans. We know that every school is unique, so feel free to pick and choose the strategies that make sense for your school’s resources and priorities. Use the Playbook to customize a plan that aligns with your goals and fosters a healthier, more supportive environment for your students.

Domains

Promote Social Connectedness

Foster supportive social connections with campus, family, and friends to combat loneliness and reduce the risk of mental health problems or suicide.

Identify Students At Risk

Empower key influencers like residence hall staff, academic advisors, faculty, and fellow students to recognize and refer students in distress, fostering a culture of support on campus.

Address Obstacles for Seeking Help

Promote awareness of mental health services, dispel treatment skepticism, combat stigmas, and clarify cost and insurance concerns to encourage students in need to seek help proactively.

Provide Mental Health &
Substance Abuse Services

Incorporate diverse staff, flexible treatment options, and clinic hours aligned with student schedules. Facilitate access to off-campus resources for long-term care when needed, especially considering the often limited duration of free treatment in college clinics.

Establish Crisis Management Procedures

Ensure 24/7 access to crisis phone/chat lines and publicize them widely on campus. Establish a process for legally appropriate information sharing between local ERs and school health/counseling services.

Promote Means Safety

Thoroughly scan the campus environment to limit access to potentially harmful items such as weapons, poisonous chemicals, and high places, reducing the risk of self-harm and accidental deaths.

Develop Life Skills Education

Educate students on healthy coping strategies for college stress, focusing on life skills such as friendship and relationship management, problem-solving, decision-making, emotional identification and management, healthy living, and discovering life purpose and identity.
